In 2021, I initiated my foray into the realm of painting through self-guided online study. Subsequently, in 2022, I elected to formalize my pursuit of this artistic endeavor by undertaking a minor in Studio Art during my college education. This academic commitment has allowed me to delve more deeply into the intricacies of my newfound passion.

Unforgettable Sunset

This painting is inspired by a photo taken by me in Page town when I traveled to Las Vegas. This sunset appears after both sides of the sky are running, and only the middle part of the sky is sunny I have never seen such magical weather before. As my second painting, I have learned a lot through painting the clouds and multi-layered sky.

Evil Eye

This painting is inspired by a unique landscape in China called “Evil Eye,” a natural hot spring in the middle of the desert. I turn the realistic photo into a more abstract expression by adding a collage to the painting. Sticking colored tissue fragments and tissue strips, I add textures to the painting to show the complexity of the natural landscape. The colored tissue fragment is inspired by Chinese tie dye. I also used tape to paint the perfectly straight lines over the left upside corner to add some “unnatural element” to this natural landscape painting. The spots on the right upside corner are the way I represent people in the original photo. The center of the painting is painted with a strong contrast of red and green, representing both the hot spring water and the versatile weather outside. This contrast illustrates the Chinese proverb "Fight inconsistency with consistency.

Still Life with Apples and Pears

This is my first painting on canvas, and adjusting portion and color by following Cezanne taught me a lot. I love how he paints the table and also the walls behind it. Although they occupy a large space, there are still many details and strokes he uses for them. From Cezanne’s painting, I realize that white can be colorful white, and unicolor space also contains different colors.

The Channel at Gravelines, Evening

This is my first time trying this style and using color pastels instead of acrylic paint to copy Seurat’s work. From this process, I understood that stroke is also an important artistic choice aside from color and objects to influence the effect of the painting. Using specific strokes can signify style, and I also learned how to create shade and contrast by piling up colors in one area.

Time and Still Life Experiment

This group of paintings is created under different time limits, including 40min, 30min, 20min, 15min, 5min, and 1min. By painting the same still life under different time limits, I understood how time limits could change the final presentation of the art works, and I explored more possibilities of contrast between objects and shade with the creativity of color.

Digital Painting

Jequirity

This piece is inspired by a poem from China's Tang dynasty, which expresses the emotion of missing and love. This piece is my first time to try paint a figure from this angle, and I learned a lot from painting the texture of snow.

《相思》

王维 著

红豆生南国,

The red beans grow in southern land.

春来发几枝。

How many loadsin spring the trees?

愿君多采撷,

Gatherthem till full is your hand;

此物最相思。

They would revive fondmemories.

Pisces

This is the first side face portrait I painted. As a constellation lover, I investigate different constellations' personalities and traits. Pisces, my own constellation, is representative of sensitivity, romance, and fantasy, so I want to express the sentimental and sad emotions in this painting. The fish's shining and the texture of the tears in this painting are my favorite parts. This portrait is also a birthday gift I gave to my 21 years old. I want myself to have more happiness and smiles and fewer tears in the new year.

Peony

This painting is inspired by the Chinese herbaceous peony, the flower in the portrait’s hand. The peony is also the national flower of China. I hope to show the dignified atmosphere of Chinese beauty in this painting. This painting references the hair, clothing, and makeup features of China's Tang Dynasty to show Chinese traditional beauty.

Cardamom

This is my first digital painting, and it is inspired by a Chinese herb: cardamom. This plant also represents young girls and beautiful youth, which also echoes my first painting with youthfulness and imperfection at that time, but I also like such imperfections because they are records of being better.
